Roccellinastrum lagarostrobi Kantvilas

Lichenologist 22: 83 (1990). T: Pine Ck, 2.5 km north of Greystone Bluff, Tas., 140 m, on leafy twigs of Lagarostrobos franklinii at edge of rainforest along stream bank, 18 Feb. 1989, G.Kantvilas 61/89 & J.Jarman; holo: HO; iso: BM, NSW.

Thallus subfruticose, byssoid-cottony, white, with ragged coarsely granular tips, forming irregular tufts 2–7 mm wide. Hyphae 2.5–8.0 µm wide, very thick-walled; outer surface markedly crystalline; lumen 0.5–0.8 µm wide, visible as a very thin central thread. Photobiont cells roundish, 5–9 µm diam., confined to the outermost granular parts of the thallus. Apothecia very rare, globose, immarginate, 0.1–0.2 mm diam., white or faintly flesh-coloured. Epithecium pale yellow-brown, granular, colourless in KOH. Hymenium hyaline, 35–45 µm thick. Asci cylindrical to clavate, 30–35 × 6–10 µm. Paraphyses slender, sparingly branched,c. 0.5 µm thick. Ascospores bacilliform, (1–) 2-septate, (7–) 9–12 × 1.5–3.0 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Thallus K–, KC–, C–, Pd+ red, UV–; containing protocetraric acid.

Endemic to Tas. This species was first described from sterile thalli growing on the living leaves of the Tasmanian, endemic conifer Lagarostrobos franklinii in lowland rainforest fringing rivers and streams. Subsequently, it has been found on the living and dead leaves of species of Richea (Epacridaceae) in subalpine woodland. One of these specimens has very scattered apothecia.
